Job Summary: The Concrete Laborer is responsible for assisting in the preparation, pouring, and finishing of concrete for construction projects. This role involves handling tools and materials, maintaining a safe and clean work environment, and ensuring that concrete is poured and finished according to specifications.
Key Responsibilities:
- Concrete Preparation: Assist in preparing the site for concrete pouring, including setting forms, cleaning surfaces, and ensuring proper alignment and leveling.
- Concrete Mixing: Mix, pour, and spread concrete in accordance with specifications. Use hand tools or machinery for mixing, pouring, and finishing concrete as needed.
- Form Setting: Set and align concrete forms and molds to ensure the desired shape and finish for walls, floors, driveways, sidewalks, and other concrete structures.
- Concrete Pouring and Finishing: Assist in pouring concrete into forms and using tools to smooth, level, and finish surfaces. This may include finishing concrete with trowels, floats, or other equipment to achieve the required texture.
- Reinforcement Installation: Install reinforcement bars (rebar) or wire mesh into forms to reinforce concrete structures before pouring.
- Surface Maintenance: Assist with surface treatments such as applying curing compounds, smoothing edges, and performing surface repairs.
- Material Handling: Move and distribute materials like gravel, sand, cement, and other tools or equipment required for the job.
- Cleanup: Maintain a clean and organized worksite by cleaning tools, equipment, and removing any debris or leftover materials after completing tasks.
- Safety Compliance: Follow all safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, helmets, and safety glasses. Report any safety hazards or accidents to the supervisor.
- Tool Operation and Maintenance: Operate basic tools and machinery, including wheelbarrows, shovels, vibrators, and power tools, while ensuring they are well-maintained and in good working condition.
- Collaboration: Work closely with other laborers, carpenters, and construction crew members to ensure the timely and efficient completion of projects.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Experience: Previous experience in concrete work or construction is preferred but not required; on-the-job training is often provided.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to perform physically demanding tasks such as lifting heavy materials, bending, standing, and working in varying weather conditions.
- Attention to Detail: Ability to follow instructions precisely and ensure that concrete is mixed and applied to meet specific requirements.
- Teamwork: Ability to work well with others and communicate effectively on a construction site.
- Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to identify and address minor issues that arise during the pouring and finishing processes.
- Safety Awareness: Knowledge of basic construction site safety procedures and willingness to follow them at all times.
- Equipment Handling: Ability to operate and maintain hand tools and basic machinery used in concrete work.
Education Requirements:
- High School Diploma or equivalent (preferred).
Working Conditions:
- Work is typically performed outdoors and may involve exposure to varying weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, or rain.
- The role involves frequent physical labor, including heavy lifting, bending, and standing for long periods.
- May require working in noisy environments and with hazardous materials, including cement and other chemicals.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift and carry heavy loads (up to 50 lbs or more).
- Ability to perform manual tasks such as digging, carrying, and handling heavy tools and materials.
- Ability to bend, kneel, and squat for extended periods.
